Requirements

Qualifications

  • 21 years of age (note: there is no maximum age limit).
  • Honorable discharge from military service, if applicable.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • No violent misdemeanor or felony convictions. This also applies to charges/violations of any federal/state laws relating to force, theft, dishonesty, gambling, alcohol (liquor) or controlled substances.
  • Citizen of the United States.

Basic Recruit Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree (or 54 semester hours with C grades or better) from a Regionally Accredited College/University

OR

  • 2 years of cumulative active duty Military Service with an honorable discharge, stipulated on DD Form 214 or NGB Form 22

 

Basic Recruit applicants must successfully complete and pass the following:

  • A Running Test (1.5 miles within 16:30 minutes or less)
  • An Obstacle Course (a foot chase simulation) 160 seconds or less

  • Behavioral Interview
  • Background Screening
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Clinical Interview
  • Medical Exam
  • Finger Printing

 

Fast Track Lateral Requirements

  • 5+ years employment as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • Verifiable Personnel File
  • Graduate of Memphis Police, Shelby County Sheriff, or Tennessee Law Enforcement (Donelson) Training Academies
  • No college education or military experience required

Lateral Transfer Recruit Requirements

  • 5+ years employment as a P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • Verifiable Personnel File
  • No college education or military experience required

 

Lateral Recruit applicants must successfully complete and pass the following:

  • Firearms proficiency course
  • Background Screening
  • Personnel file review – provided by qualifying agency
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Clinical Interview
  • Medical Exam
  • Finger Printing

Physical and Written entry exams are NOT required as a condition of hire for lateral applicants.
