Requirements

Qualifications

  • 21 years of age (note: there is no maximum age limit).
  • Honorable discharge from military service, if applicable.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • No violent misdemeanor or felony convictions. This also applies to charges/violations of any federal/state laws relating to force, theft, dishonesty, gambling, alcohol (liquor) or controlled substances.
  • Citizen of the United States.

Basic Recruit Minimum Requirements

  • An Associate degree (or a minimum of fifty-four (54) semester hours with “C” grades or better) earned at a regionally accredited college or university.

OR

  • A minimum of an Associate degree in Criminal Justice earned at a nationally accredited college or university, recognized by the U. S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (e.g. DETC, COE, ACCSC)

OR

  • Five (5) years of full-time responsible, verifiable work experience and a High School Diploma or education equivalency. (Special Requirement: Applicants who qualify under this stipulation must obtain an Associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university within four (4) years from date of employment.)

OR

  • Two (2) years of cumulative active duty military service with a honorable discharge, stipulated on DDform214 (member 4 copy).

OR 

  • Five (5) years of active reserve military service (any branch including national guard), stipulated on DDform214, DDform256 and/or NGB22.

AND

  • Must not have been convicted of, or pled guilty (or enter a plea of Nolo Contendere) to any felony charges, violent misdemeanors or domestic violence crimes. No theft convictions within the last 10 years or DUI convictions within the last five (5) years from the date of application.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program.
  • Must successfully pass entry level requirements and testing (physical, written, background investigation, psychological and medical) for Police Recruit.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver license as a condition for continued employment.

 

Basic Recruit applicants must successfully complete and pass the following:

  • 1.5 mile run within 16:30 (mins/secs) or less
  • Obstacle Course (a foot chase simulation) 160 seconds or less

  • Background Screening

Fast Track Lateral Requirements

  • 5+ years employment as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • No college education or military experience required
  • Verifiable Personnel File
  • Graduate of Memphis Police, Shelby County Sheriff, or Tennessee Law Enforcement (Donelson) Training Academies

– or –

  • 3+ years employment as a Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • Plus MPD’s minimum college education or military experience required
  • Verifiable Personnel File
  • Graduate of Memphis Police, Shelby County Sheriff, or Tennessee Law Enforcement (Donelson) Training Academies

 

Lateral Transfer Recruit Requirements

  • 5+ years employment as a P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • No college education or military experience required
  • Verifiable Personnel File

– or –

  • 3+ years employment as a P.O.S.T. certified Officer at a law enforcement agency with a minimum of 20 full-time commissioned officers
  • Plus MPD’s minimum college education or military experience required
  • Verifiable Personnel File

 

Lateral Recruit applicants must successfully complete and pass the following:

  • Firearms proficiency course
  • Background Screening
  • Personnel file review – provided by qualifying agency
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Clinical Interview
  • Medical Exam
  • Finger Printing

Physical and Written entry exams are NOT required as a condition of hire for lateral applicants.
